Build Your Knowledge and Skills Before Buying Gear
Our central philosophy is that knowledge and training are more valuable than equipment. We repeatedly emphasize learning, practicing, and becoming capable before relying on expensive gear. Physical fitness is a force multiplier that increases the value of every other preparation you make.
Use the Rule of Threes to Set Your Priorities
Rather than preparing for everything at once, we recommend following the Rule of Threes:
- Air and breathing
- Shelter and temperature control
- Water
- Food
- Community and support networks
This helps you decide what deserves attention first, rather than buying random supplies.
Store Water Before Worrying About Large Food Stockpiles
We consistently identify water as one of the highest preparedness priorities. Food matters, but dehydration becomes life-threatening much sooner. Our recommendation is to establish a water supply and a means of purifying additional water before expanding long-term food storage.
Organize and Expand the Food You Already Eat
Instead of buying specialty survival food first, we recommend:
- Inventory your pantry.
- Use FIFO (First In, First Out) rotation.
- Buy extra of the foods your family already eats.
- Build toward 3 days to 2 weeks of normal pantry foods.
- Track what you have so nothing is wasted.
The goal is to create a pantry that supports everyday life while also serving as emergency food storage.
Train for Emergencies and Make a Plan
Our website stresses that equipment alone is not enough. A new prepper should:
- Stay calm during emergencies.
- Develop situational awareness.
- Learn basic first aid and bleeding control.
- Decide when to bug in or bug out.
- Consider programs like CERT to gain practical disaster-response skills.
Our emphasis is on becoming someone who can think clearly and act effectively in an emergency.
What Five Things Should A New Prepper Do First?
At NW Survival, we promote a simple progression:
- Learn and train.
- Improve your fitness.
- Prioritize using the Rule of Threes.
- Secure your water supply.
- Build and manage a practical pantry while developing emergency response skills.
This reflects our philosophy that preparedness is about becoming more self-reliant through knowledge, planning, and consistent practice rather than simply accumulating equipment.
As Always, Stay Vigilant and Be Prepared
You play a critical role in your preparedness. By preparing yourself for the unexpected, you will become more self-reliant and a valuable asset to your community.
