The Black Sky Event refers to a prolonged, widespread collapse of the electric grid and dependent infrastructure: typically lasting days to weeks (or longer in severe cases) that cascades into loss of communications, water systems, fuel distribution, banking, healthcare, and supply chains. The term is used by resilience researchers, grid operators, and emergency planners to describe scenarios beyond ordinary blackouts: high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP), extreme geomagnetic storms (Carrington-class solar events), coordinated physical/cyber attacks on substations and control systems, or cascading failures from extreme weather plus system fragility.
Unlike a short local outage, a Black Sky Event removes the continuous connectivity and on-demand energy that modern societies treat as baseline. Preparation therefore focuses on sustaining life and order through the period when the grid and internet are largely unavailable.
Core preparation principles
- Assume no external rescue for 14–30+ days in the worst zones. Mutual aid and government response will be severely constrained.

- Firearms training and secure storage where legal and appropriate; non-lethal options and de-escalation skills matter equally.
Shelter, heat, and light
- Home is usually the best shelter if structurally sound. Reinforce against weather, fire,
and intrusion. - Heating: wood stove (with seasoned wood and chimney safety), propane heaters rated for indoor use, heavy insulation, layered clothing, free-standing tents (can be used indoors), sleeping bags rated for expected temperatures. In summer, focus on ventilation and shade.
- Lighting: LED headlamps/flashlights with spare batteries or hand-crank/solar chargers. Avoid open flames as primary light indoors.
- Backup power: small solar generators with portable solar panels + battery banks sized for critical loads only (medical devices, radios, limited lighting/charging). Small multi-fuel generators. Full-home generators require fuel logistics that become extremely difficult.
- Fuel: gasoline (volatile with a limited shelf life), propane (stable with an indefinite shelf life) for your vehicle, generator, and heaters.
Water
- Store a minimum of 1 gallon (≈4 liters) per person per day for drinking and minimal hygiene. Aim for 2+ weeks minimum, ideally a month.

- Know local surface water sources and how to make them safe. Without power, municipal systems fail within hours to days.

- Non-perishable, calorie-dense: rice, beans, pasta, oats, peanut butter, canned goods, freeze-dried meals, high-calorie bars. Calculate ~2,000–2,500 kcal/person/day. Food preparation requires extra water; plan accordingly: one gallon a day for cooking.
- Store what you already eat so rotation is natural. Include a manual can opener, basic spices, and a way to cook without grid power (camping stove + fuel, rocket stove, solar oven, or open fire where legal/safe).
- Long-term: knowledge of foraging, gardening, or preserving is secondary but valuable once the acute phase passes.
Community
- Over-preparation that isolates you from community can be as dangerous
as under-preparation. - Strongest resilience is local: neighborhood watch, skill sharing, and pre-existing trust networks outperform isolated stockpiling.
- Mental health: isolation, uncertainty, and stress are major factors. Pre-identify coping methods and community ties.
Communications and information
- Continuity of connectivity cannot be assumed. Prepare for radio:
- Battery or hand-crank AM/FM/weather radio.
- Handheld VHF/UHF radios (with licensing where required) or CB for local coordination.

- Skills that retain value when money systems are disrupted: basic mechanics, first aid, food production, repair, and barter competence.
Realistic constraints and trade-offs
- Full self-sufficiency for months is extremely difficult and expensive for most households. Prioritize the first 2–4 weeks heavily.
- Fuel, batteries, and propane become scarce quickly; plan consumption carefully.

What does not work well during a Black Sky Event?
Relying solely on the assumption that “someone will fix it quickly,” keeping all critical data only in the cloud, or treating preparation as a one-time shopping list without practice. Continuous connectivity and just-in-time logistics have trained entire populations out of older resilience habits; re-learning them takes deliberate effort.
Preparation for a Black Sky-level event is ultimately about reducing the period of helplessness when the systems modern life depends on go dark. The societies and households that fare best will be those that treated intermittency as a design constraint rather than an unthinkable exception.
